"Psycho Drama Tour 2008" finds Alice Cooper in the Canadian leg of his tour. How important is it for indie bands to get in with the touring legends? I say it's a big leg up. The Cliks were excited to be riding shot-gun with The Cult, Crash Parallel is opening for David Usher and Sean Kelly of Crash Kelly's appreciation of opening for the shock-rocker himself is well documented. Yes it's great on the bio and it's great to try out performing your songs on a big stage. But I think the biggest benefit is watching and learning. Some things just can't be learned in a book. For more of what Sean Kelly has to say about opening for Alice Cooper, check out Episode 9 by clicking here

EPISODE 98 is a Canadian Indie music wake. We raise our glass to great bands that are no more.

From our archives of great Canadian indie we feature some of the great bands that did not survive the bludgeoning demands of indie music life in Canada. Lucky for all of us, a legacy of great music has been left behind - some of which we captured at IndieCan Studios.

This weeks' show also features some great acts on the rise with new music for you to enjoy so we won't be leaving you in tears. From the ashes of some of these fallen bands some new projects have already begun but the thing to remember: Music is here and now. Don't put off seeing a band today because you think you can go see them anytime. This week we remember and invite you to do the same by clicking  HERE

Polaris Music Award 2008 Finalists:

Black Mountain In The Future
• Basia Bulat Oh, My Darling
• Caribou Andorra
• Kathleen Edwards Asking For Flowers
• Holy Fuck LP
• Plants and Animals Parc Avenue
• Shad The Old Prince
• Stars In Our Bedroom After The War
• Two Hours Traffic Little Jabs
• The Weakerthans Reunion Tour

The Polaris short list is finalized at 10 records. If you really love music from Canada and you likely have an opinion, maybe a strong opinion, like "Why the fuck was Touch Up by Mother Mother completely snubbed?" or "how did Wintersleep not make the top-10?" Or, it's a good list, I don't care who wins as long as it's not Two Hours Traffic."

But here you go, a committee of experts have declared this the top 10 records on artistic merit alone and one and only one will win the truly Canadian sum of $20,000. One of these bands will politely thank the People of Polaris but seriously, this doesn't cover the summer gas tab for any of these bands. With local radio stations giving away 100s of thousands of dollars a year in places like Ottawa and Calgary there is something slightly embarrassing about the token prize money on a National stage. Just a thought - skip the dinner and expenses and send EACH AND EVERY finalists $10,000. I know, opinions are like .... and I have one of those, I may actually be one. But just because something is good, and the Polaris Music Award is good, doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be criticized or improved upon. I see a good thing, a good start and room for growth. Anyway, here's the list, let's keep the discussion going More at POLARIS:

Half way through a Canadian tour, Vancouver's The Painted Birds played NXNE and visited IndieCan Studios to lay down some "TPB, live at IndieCan style" and discuss the music biz differences of VanCity and what can look like Torontopia, when you are (geographically) beyond Hope (B.C.). Episode 91 opens with The Painted Birds on their painted perch, then heads back stage at the Toronto Pride main-stage to bring you up close and personal with what these people pictured below had to cram in to see and hear. We hear from Mad June of Montreal, Shitt Hottt of T.Dot and Jeffery Straker, from Saskatchewan, no Toronto, no Saskatchewan. - X-Tra, X-Tra Read all about it,

This Week, the Focus in Canada is North By North East in Toronto. If you were there, here's what you don't remember - If you couldn't make it, trust IndieCan to bring you more NXNE than NXNE. If you were visiting Canada for the music festival we hope you liked us. Can we be your Festival Scrap Book? To the fans, you were great. Music is alive and well and it would all be B.S. if you, the fan weren't digging it the way you were. LISTEN to our last few IndieCan Radio shows to hear how much fun NXNE is/was (it lasts forever at IndieCan), CLICK Here to go to our EVENTS page to see and read more about it. Enjoy the best music you've never heard from Toronto.

Top left, True North's Rough Trade forever changed the Canadian musical landscape, born of the new-wave scene of the late '70's and '80s. Carole Pope won three Junos in that time and the 2008 NXNE opened at the Phoenix for a bitter sweet night. History was celebrated before a living room-size crowd in what was (poorly) billed as a NXNE extra. The Ember Swift Band (bottom right) opened up and delivered what we'll deem a stadium-like folk/jazz performance. Rough Trade followed which included some back-ground vocals from Oakville's Lily Frost and the crowd called out for more. It was then time for 1/2 the crowd which was the Hidden Cameras ensemble to take the stage to close the night off. A friend of IndieCan called it the "private Hidden Camera's dance party." Everyone in attendance was equally delighted by the calibre of entertainment as they were incensed on behalf of the artists that the place wasn't at over-capacity. The festival program didn't have as much ink on the artists and event, nor did the web site. This was called the Mo Retro Showcase and I am sure there is a co-promoter who's road to hell was paved with a plan to promote the event better.

Top right, Julie Doiron (Friday night at the Horseshoe) and bottom left; Matt Mays and El Torpedo (Saturday at the Horseshoe) were the "sorry you can't get in" kind of crowds that we expect at North By. Julie and Dick (Duo) was the only set that IndieCan Joe caught from beginning to end that has us speculating as to what that means - a knack for Canadiana song-writing genius, respect for the musical journey-persons of the Canadian musical landscape or soccer-mom crush - votes are still being tabulated.

When IndieCan visited Halifax POP Explosion back in October 2007 our Coast-to-Coast dream's last Internet super-highway spike was hammered in as Team Halifax was established. It was exactly a year prior that we were in Vancouver's Vertical Production Studios for episodes 20 and 21 which were the first ever shows recorded outside of Toronto. Now, Episode 65 features some of the first live recordings from the east coast. It's all new again as you'll hear on this weeks show (you'll know what we're talking about when you tune in -- our first interview sounds like a construction zone recording) but the music is fabulous and the shows more fun that CRTC regulates. We introduce you to Pamela Under Water and TEAM HALIFAX as well as other great indie music from sea to shining sea and beyond. CLICK HERE TO GET TO EPISODE 65 - THE HALIFAX INDIE SCENE :-)

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR YOU WITH INDIECANs PUNK U

07-07-07 in Toronto a Punk Fest was taking place at Kathedral with headliner, D.O.A. IndieCan had the chance to hang out with Vancouver's 30 year old international punk institution and we had a rousing interview with Joey, Randy and Baldini in the green room of The Big Bop. This was a magical reparte of the history of D.O.A., the bands they've influenced like The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Green Day and more, punk yesterday and punk today and the meaning of "Talk - Action = Zero. That was some interview. Sadly and "sorrily" technical retard Joe Chisholm did not actually capture the interview on his drive. Something about an "ON" button we're told. Anyway, Joey Keithley was good enough to do a phone interview with Joe and that's the basis of Episode 48. We also have The Buck Brother's interview from the end of their Canadian tour at The Drake Hotel. It's an all Punk hour with many more representations of the great Punk in Canada. Download and keep this one. It's one of those once-is-not-enough shows. TAKE ME TO EPISODE 48 Right Punking NOW!!

For kiss-ass Punk Students, the entire Joey "Shithead" Keithley interview has been archived in our School of Rock page so if you can't get enough, this is for you.

From the 2007 Pod caster's Across Borders in Kingston, I caught up with (actually, I interviewed him on the run) Tod Maffin who is a futurist, CBC broadcaster, lecturer and one of planet earth's foremost experts on pod casting. I hate the word "pod cast" but since consulting the experts, if you Email or make calls on a mobile YOU will likely be pod casting within the next 10 years and of course, I already am. So let's hear more about where you are going to be getting more of your news and entertainment over the next decade. Let's go pod casting!

From PEI's Nathan Wily to Vancouver's RALLY CAR and every region in between, Episode 43 is action packed. IndieCan recognizes the important job that CBC Radio3 and SIRIUS do for Canadian Indie and we have the great honour of having CBC Radio3 Music Director James Booth with us, sharing his enthusiasm for Canadian emerging talent and updating us on some great new iniatives at New Music Canada - Yes, that link will show you what a liberal tax-payer based budget can do to cover the Canadian music scene. When asked by Mr. Booth about IndieCan, "How do find time to do all that?" the best I could come up with was a seeming compulsive disorder. Nothing my fellow indie artists won''t be able to identify with. For low budget IndieCan style NXNE coverage, follow the link below.ENOUGH RAMBLING - Let's hear the SHOW!!!

Like the Gardner bump over the Humber River, the filthy disgusting Horseshoe stage was a T.Dot icon. I'll get over it... More importantly....NXNE IndieCan coverage NOW.
