| From
Halifax to Vancouver, the best music you've never
heard was celebrated in T.Dot and IndieCan-iacs
were bouncing from club to club and venue to venue
like pong balls on crack. We chill in the hotel
with Maggie Martin of EMI
Music Publishing to talk shop and find out
what brought her from L.A. to T.O. We compare
notes with Melanie Schade of Indie
Solo. One of the IndieCan bands that left
with Jumo hardware this year filled Dundas Square
with sound so we kick off the show with Wintersleep.
Then we hear from host town acts, Afterparty,
Justin
Rutledge and
Fjord Rowboats, we go west for Axis
of Conversation, Laura
Smith,
Language-Arts, Perfect
Hour, we go QC for
Zeros and Flotilla

Rock you tenderly and Folk you hard in Episode
136. I find it is best just to make nebulous statements.
More explaination reduces the chance of being
thoght of as profound. However, I will tell you
that this week we do something so new and exciting
I am gitty just writing this. The Great
Lake Swimmers are touring their new record,
"Lost Channels." Stories of this Toronto's
band's sell-out performances overseas are part
of present day folklore as indie music artists
and industry muse about how it "could and
should" be over a cold one. So, I had to
check this out for myself. From The
Glee Club in Birmingham England we were part
of a sell-out crowd enjoying the Great Lake Swimmers.
We bring you the after-show interview with Tony
Dekker. Also, we talk with the man who books Great
Lake Swimmers in Birmingham, Markus
Seargent, about the UK's fascination with
Canadian indie music.
Also
this week, Madison
Violet, Jerome
Godoo, The
Compound, Lily
Frost, Corbin
Murdoch and The Nautical Mile, Rude
Boy, a new project from Winnipeg called
Record
of The Week Club and the UK's Tara
London.

| OK,
so our Year in review isn't very sophisticated, because
it was all so good. We shuffled the deck, started from
the top and crammed in what we could, but it worked
out pretty darn remarkable. Here we go - Alphabetically,
we have: Jim
Armstrong, Don
Brownrigg, Caledonia,
The
Cockroaches, Creepshow
The
Free Press, The
I Spies, The
John Henrys, The
Midway State, Mother

This
week, IndieCan can't get over our Montreal love-in
so we have some spill over - USWM + Adam
and Amethysts + an interview with one of IndieCan
Wednesdays highlights - October
Sky. Also from our Wednesday at the Annex WreckRoom
in Toronto: Edmonton's, 40
Thieves and Calgary's the
Wax Poets. I proclaim on the show that "next
week The Wax Poets" will be live at IndieCan.
That session is recorded and in on-deck, but I am
saving it now until after my "The Great 08"
Year in Review which will take two shows to do proper
justice to.
We
cross the Atlantic in two ways this week. Toronto's
The
Outfit has morphed into Les
Gars, re-branding themselves in the UK. Son
of Dave and Hospital
Bombers are trying to increase their musical scope
by enduring themselves to Canadian music fans and
I think we should adopt them. Both bands are making
shovelling Canadian inroads and we're proud to bring
them to you. Our cross-Canada trip includes, from
Saskatchewan's deep-freeze The
Blood Lines and Pearson,
from frosty "Winterpeg" we have Twilight
Hotel, we solve some secrets about ghost tracks
by Mother
Mother in Vancouver and from T.Dot we feature
the eagerly awaited CD from The
Strip + we open with a Justin
Rutledge track with a song about loved ones that
are missing. So from IndieCan to everyone who finds
their bloodlines incomplete this time of year, our
thoughts are with you.
Check out October Sky, 40 Thieves
and other IndieCan Wednesdays performances HERE.

| This
week is our "Advanced Copy" show.
Blackie
and The Rodeo Kings have a compilation CD not yet
released and we got one from True North to share with
you. Flying
Eyes had their CD release November 22 and we have
it, Anthony Gomes and
The New Soul Cowboys are up to something new, too.
Every heard of Nineteen
Seventy-seven or The
WitHouts? Now you're getting how this works - of
course not - you hear it first on IndieCan Radio.
From
Calgary,
Wax Poets were at IndieCan Wednesday's as part
of a cross-Canada tour. Their CD comes out officially
upon their return, but we have it for you this week.
Also on the show, "live at IndieCan" flashbacks
from Raine
Maida and Once
Just, Night Flowers
who come to IndieCan Wednesday soon and from Newfoundland,

#98:
A show we call "Friends Down in Flames"
As
we approach epic Episode 100 we are in a reflective
mood at IndieCan. This week we look at carnage - great
Canadian bands that have fallen by the wayside since
IndieCan came on the scene in 2006. Fortunately these
artists left behind a great legacy of music that we
were lucky enough to be a part of. We remember Tacoma
Redd, The
Darns, Anti-Hero,
Aide de Camp and
Lucy - may they Rest In Peace.
Still
alive and well we have new music from Latefallen,
Black
Diamond Bay (Patrick Krief), Ben
Sures, Elliott
Brood and next week's feature artist, Justin
Rutledge. We are also pleased to introduce, for
the first time at IndieCan - Night
Flowers.
Hey,
if you like this weeks' show TELL YOUR FRIENDS, send
an email, start a Facebook group. Over 100,000 listened
in during August. Wouldn't it be cool if we had 1
Million listeners by Show 100. Now that would be special

THIS
WEEKS RADIO SHOW REVIEWS
INDIECAN
YEAR II
As
IndieCan's 2nd anniversary approaches we are feeling
reflective and nostalgic. We are reviewing the IndieCan
year two that was. The goal, this show is to cram
as much "live at IndieCan" into 60 minutes
as we possibly can and here's what we've come up with
for Rock 'n' Roll School reading week:
 |
| Tin
Bangs, Episode 15 Live at IndieCan |
From
team "Constant Crush" we have Tin Bangs
and The Outfit, Vancouver's Mother Mother from their
Hillside Summer session this year and Rally Car from
the awesome Canada Day we enjoyed at Downsview Park,
remember when we borrowed The Salads Mista D to yack
with the London Reggae band, Staylefish? How about
Peterborough's The Kiss and Tells and we explore band
manifestos with Hunter Valentine and Dearly Beloved,

week.
But wait - there's more. The Cindy Doire Band, The
Cliks and Toronto's The Strip are also packed into
this hour or this part self-indulgence and part one-a-day
vitamin for your soul. I hope we bring back some memories
and tease you with anything you might have missed.
The
biggest thing in reflecting over the year in review
is how, just by having fun and sharing the fun, we
have all made Canadian indie music stronger and better.
IndieCan has grown because those of you who were strangers
before have become friends and those who were friends
have become family. This show is dedicated to the
music fans - thanks for loving music makers.

IndieCan
would like to salute and thank all those who have stepped
up to the plate, the mic, the merch table, the sound board
and computer to help make this year possible.
Niell
Dixon of Canadian Music Week who I interviewed this fall
said to us about networking at music festivals, "No
contact is too small, even if it's just a place to crash
next time your in town…" and in that spirit, no friend
of IndieCan is insignificant – from those who have hosted,
made posters, sent out notices, told a friend to check us
out and those we have slept with (so to speak), we thank
you for your commitment to the indie music of Canada.
In
less than two years we have recorded artists in a dozen
different studios – many of which would welcome us back
- lol. We've been main-stage, side stage, back stage; in
festivals, bars, alleys and offices – where ever the never-ending
tale of Canadian Indie is happening, we want to be there
and in '007 we have been to and done a lot. It's a time
for reflection and the image in the reflection is smiling
ear-to-ear.

EPISODE
54 of INDIECAN RADIO WITH CALGARY's ONCE JUST
THE
GOOD BYE SUMMER CANADIAN INDIE SCENE
I
just got a new copy of "Summer's Over" the Moe
Berg solo CD second hand on Bloor Street - $7.99 and worth
every penny. So that's the theme of this weeks show. We
have a dart-board review of Summer 007 and some new stuff
that if you miss you'll be like those un-cool kids still
wearing white after Labour Day.
So,
new stuff: From Windsor, welcome Corporate
Saturday. To any U.S. boarder
crossing guards who subscribe to the show, of course they
were joking about how they get to Detroit to play shows
there. Toronto's contribution comes from Numbers
and Figures from their CD,
The Parable of The Broken Window. From Montreal, The Dear's
guitarist
Patrick Krief is re-releasing
Take it Or Leave and we'll hear from Patrick and some of
his band mates. From Guelph, Sam
Turton, who I met at Hillside
and became captured by his Activist meets Blues playing
slide guitarist messin' with the Baptist preacher's wife
kind of sound. Really, it's a genre - look it up. While
you're looking thigs up, find Manotick on a map - home of
the 613 area code mop-tops Hollerado.
We shared some stories and laughs outside the Silver Dollar
earlier this summer and I would like to share it with you.
So
much happened this summer that a review in an hour is laughable.
But I bring back as wide a range of random coolness. The
show includes the words and live music of Marc
Gelinas, and Psychotic
4 from Montréal and Rally
Car from Vancouver as well
as Toronto's Trophy.
So
that's how we're starting September - a little old meets
new. On deck in the next couple of weeks we'll be hearing
from Calgary's Once Just and Alberta deserters Sam Hell
who are now calling T.Dot home.
IndieCan
will be at Halifax
Pop Explosion so anyone with
East-coast show ideas, you know how to reach us.
Have
a Happy Fall! Put those un-coool white shoes away and come
download some way-cool indie music.

April 24th. The Cliks will be touring Western Canada,
The U.S.A., and The UK before coming back to The
Molson Amphitheatre in June. The Cliks perform three
songs from Snakehouse and chat with IndieCan about
how they're coming together as a band. Other world
class Canuck artists on this show include Down
With The Butterfly,
Ember
Swift, The
Ride Theory, Lye,
Galore,
Hurricane Cletus and from the UK, The
Buck Brothers.
For
those of you saw the documentary "WHAT IS INDIE?"
you couldn't help but take note that for Ember Swift,
indie isn't a concept, a philosophy or style of
music - it's how she has successfully managed her
life, her career and her music. Having experimented
with Management Cos, D.I.Y. and running her own
label, Ember Swift is a case-study in Indie done
right. IndieCan was happy to catch up with The Ember
Swift Band for a performance at Hugh's Room in Toronto
March 11th and our interview with Ms. Swift is this
week's Industry Insider segment.
