Reporting from POP Montreal, can't stop thinking about a friend in hospital

Happy October everyone!

As I write, IndieCan Radio is at POP Montreal taking in the cool nights
and sweaty clubs of the city which is arguably the centre of Canadian
music culture. Culture seems to come before commerce or politics in this
moody but happy city. It isn’t too early to put a shout out to the work
going on in Toronto as we speak for IndieWeek 2009, October 7 to 10th.
And have you seen the line up for Halifax Pop Explosion? Looking good
east-coast!

Episode 149 of InidieCan Radio is a magic one. We have a little Montreal
with an interview with Winter Gloves. We are a little west-coast with
Victoria’s Jet’s Overheard (we even hear from Jets Overhead producer, Neil
Osborne with some 54-40 this week) and this week includes some home-town
Ontario pride, with Spiral Beach – all talking with you and I from
Canadian Music Café as part of The Toronto International Film Festival.
Stef Lang is another west-coast find for us and we share her music with
you.

Also, who’s heard of Half Past Four, Daniel Bryant, The Sky Life, John
Wort Hannam, the Decade of Sleep or Scott Normandy? I know I have stumped
even the most ardent indie fan with one or two of these. I expect some of
these unknown names will be holding a dear spot on your mp3 player or CD
pile shortly. I love this week’s line up.

150 is in the can and we’ll have more Music Café interviews coming your
way like Winnipeg’s The Duhks – no it’s not a hockey team, it’s a green
minded roots troop who are all deep in music heritage.

Many of you know and it will be a shock to some that Jon Long of Long &
McQuade is in hospital right now, having suffered an accident just outside
the Bloor Street store. It is all about family right now but feel free to
include Jon in your thoughts this weekend. Jon is a boisterous
spokesperson for IndieCan and indeed, all things musical and grass-roots.
I can’t tell you how much my guts are in knots right now awaiting word.
Jon – we’re thinking about you! Indie Can is 150 episodes old now and a
whole community of people have stepped up to the plate to help IndieCan
grow and Jon, we owe a debt of gratitude to you and your support.

Have a great month everyone. It’s a privilege to be one of your
dependable sources for Canadian emerging music.

Sincerely,

Joe C
