Just saw Mother Mother to kick off Canadian Music Week and its been a
good week. I give them 5 stars (out of 5) and I see room for improvement.
Everything that matters is already there singing, great songs, an
understanding of performance art and an audience that knows the songs and
participates in the process. Eureka the new Mother Mother album comes
out March 15th. It is an album in the truest sense. It is not a
collection of songs as it is a collective of songs that create a work. A
single to this album would make as much sense as a quarter-panel to a new
car. It may be squeaky clean and get your friends attention, but youve
missed the point. It was hard to believe the performance I saw was an
industry event. Hands were not crossed across chests, they were waving
and pumping in the air. Episode 222 will include an interview with Ryan
and newest Mother Jasmin, talking about SXSW, the evolution of the band
and how hard it is for music writers to liken the bands sound to anything
else. After all, what the hell is 90s power pop?
